If your sink is showing signs of slow draining and you can smell unpleasant odours as you walk into the kitchen, you might have a major plumbing problem. Having a blocked drain is something that you need to deal with quickly if you want to avoid having a burst pipe or an unusable sink. Before calling a local drain cleaning service, try some of these techniques to unclog your blocked drain.
This is probably the easiest and least expensive solution of all. While you are waiting for the water to boil, remove the standing water in your sink. Once it is clear, pour the hot water slowly into the sink and wait several seconds between each pour. You may need to repeat the process to remove the blockage.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Mix equal amount of baking soda and vinegar in a measuring cup. Once it bubbles, pour it down the clogged drain. This can help to remove any gunk or grime that has built up in the pipe. Let it sit for about an hour, then flush it through with boiling water.
Kitchen Sink Plunger
A kitchen plunger may help to unblock your drains. If you have a double sink, seal off one side with a wet cloth or a stopper. Next, fill the side of the sink you intend to plunge with enough water to create a tight seal around the plunger. Work the plunger firmly over the drain until the clog is dislodged.
